8 Authentic Duas for Shifa from the Quran and Sunnah

Illness is one of the many tests that Allah (SWT) places upon His servants. Whether the sickness is physical, emotional, or spiritual, Muslims are encouraged to seek treatment while placing complete trust in Allah, the Ultimate Healer. Making duas for shifa is one of the most beautiful acts of worship, recited by Muslims around the world when facing sickness, pain, or difficulty.

In this article, you’ll learn what shifa means in Islam, understand the Islamic perspective on sickness, and discover most authentic and powerful duas for healing from the Quran and Sunnah  that you can recite for yourself or your loved ones.

What Does Shifa Mean in Islam?

The Arabic word Shifa (شفاء) means healing, cure, recovery, and restoration. In Islam, shifa is not limited to physical recovery—it also includes emotional peace, spiritual healing, and relief from hardship.

Allah (SWT) is Ash-Shafi (ٱلشَّافِي), meaning The Healer. While doctors and medicines are means of treatment, Muslims believe that complete healing ultimately comes from Allah alone.

This is why believers regularly recite duas for shifa, asking Allah to remove illness, ease suffering, and grant complete recovery.

Healing comes only from Allah (SWT), and the Prophet ﷺ taught us many authentic duas to seek His help during times of illness. Here are some of the most authentic and powerful supplications from the Quran and Sunnah for recovery, good health, and complete healing.

(i.) Dua for Healing

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ أَشْفِهِ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Transliteration: Allahumma ashfihee shifaan laa tughaadiru saqaman.

Translation: “O Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), grant him a cure that leaves no illness.”

This is one of the most powerful duas for shifa, recited for someone who is ill.

(ii.) Dua for Visiting the Sick

Arabic: أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ

Transliteration: As’alullaha al-‘azeema rabbal ‘arshil ‘azeem an yashfiyaka.

Translation: “I ask Allah, the Mighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to cure you.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said that whoever recites this dua seven times for a sick person who has not yet been destined to die, Allah will cure them. (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)

(iii.) Dua for Mercy and Healing

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ، اشْفِ أَنتَ الشَّافِي

Transliteration: Allahumma Rabbannas adhhib il-baasa, ishfee anta ash-shaafi.

Translation: “O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the affliction and heal; You are the Healer.”

This dua a shifa directly invokes one of Allah’s most beautiful names — Ash-Shafi, the One who heals. Calling on Allah by His names and attributes is among the most beloved forms of supplication.

(v.) Dua to Place Your Trust in Allah’s Healing — Sahih Bukhari 5744

(a.) Arabic: امْسَحِ الْبَاسَ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، بِيَدِكَ الشِّفَاءُ، لاَ كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ

Transliteration: Imsahil-ba’sa rabban-nās, biyadika ash-shifā’, lā kāshifa lahu illā ant.

Translation: “O the Lord of the people! Remove the trouble — the cure is in Your Hands, and there is none except You who can remove it.”

This dua a shifa reminds believers that every cure comes solely from Allah’s mercy.

(b.) Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ، اشْفِهِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Transliteration: Allahumma Rabban-naas, adh-hibil-ba’s, ishfi wa Antash-Shaafi, laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka, shifaa’an laa yughadiru saqama.

Translation: “O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the hardship. Grant healing, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing — a healing that leaves no trace of sickness.”

This is one of the best duas for shifa in the Sunnah, narrated in Sahih Bukhari. The Prophet (ﷺ) would recite this while performing ruqyah on the sick.

(vi.) Surah Al-Falaq — Protection and Healing

Arabic: قُلْ أَعُوْذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ ، مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

Transliteration: Qul aʿūdhu bi-Rabbi-l-falaq. Min sharri mā khalaq. Wa min sharri ghāsiqin idhā waqab. Wa min sharri-n-naffāthāti fi-l-ʿuqad. Wa min sharri ḥāsidin idhā ḥasad.

Translation: “Say, I seek protection of the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of the darkening night when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) would recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas over himself during illness, blowing into his hands and wiping over his body. This practice is a cornerstone of Ruqyah healing in Islam.

(vii.) Surah An-Nas — Seeking Refuge in Allah

Arabic: قُلْ أَعُوْذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ، مَلِكِ النَّاسِ ، إِلٰهِ النَّاسِ ، مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ ، اَلَّذِيْ يُوَسْوِسُ فِيْ صُدُوْرِ النَّاسِ ، مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ

Transliteration: Qul aʿūdhu bi-Rabbi-n-nās. Maliki-n-nās. Ilāh-hin-nās. Min sharri-l-waswāsi-l-khannās. Al-ladhī yuwaswisu fī ṣudūri-n-nās. Mina-l-jinnati wa-n-nās.

Translation: “Say, I seek protection of the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the hearts of mankind, whether they be Jinn or people.”

Together, Al-Falaq and An-Nas (known as the Mu’awwidhatayn) form a complete shield against spiritual and physical harm. Reciting them morning and evening is a Sunnah that every Muslim should establish.

(viii.) Dua for Good Health (Morning & Evening)

It is recommended to recite the following dua a shifa three times every morning and evening, asking Allah for good physical health, hearing, and sight:

Arabic: اللّهُـمَّ عافِـني في بَدَنـي ، اللّهُـمَّ عافِـني في سَمْـعي ، اللّهُـمَّ عافِـني في بَصَـري ، لا إلهَ إلاّ أَنْـتَ

Transliteration: Allahumma ‘Aafinee fee badani, Allahumma ‘Aafinee fee sam’ee, Allahumma ‘Aafinee fee basari, La ilaha illa Anta.

Translation: “O Allah, make me healthy in my body. O Allah, preserve for me my hearing. O Allah, preserve for me my sight. There is none worthy of worship but You.”

This dua is a proactive supplication — asking Allah to preserve your health before illness strikes, not just after.

(ix.) Dua for Protection from Illness

Arabic: اللهم إني أعوذ بك من زوال نعمتك وتحول عافيتك وفجاءة نقمتك وجميع سخطك

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min zawali ni’matika wa tahawwuli ‘afiyatika wa fujaa’ati niqmatika wa jami’i sakhatika.

Translation: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the loss of Your blessings, from a change in my well-being, from Your sudden punishment, and from all forms of Your displeasure.”

This supplication is a reminder that health itself is a blessing from Allah — and that we should never take it for granted.
